Resolution filed in Arkansas legislature to remove party primary voting

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A resolution filed in the Arkansas legislature on Thursday would remove the party-system primary voting in the state.

Senate Joint Resolution 12 calls for the general assembly to establish a single-ballot primary system to be approved by voters. Under this proposed system, the two candidates on a ballot who receive the most votes will be who appears on the primary ballot, “regardless of each candidate’s political affiliation.”

If only two candidates file for office, they will not appear on the primary ballot and be advanced to the general election, per the bill’s language.

The single-ballot system will apply to any general, special or nonpartisan election. It would not apply to elections for local or municipal office.

After the legislature draws up the proposed law, the package will be placed before voters to accept or reject. If voted into law, the changes would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2027, and apply to elections after Jan. 1, 2028.
