Sources: Former Houston Athletic Director Chris Pezman expected to be hired by Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – According to sources close to KARK 4 News, former Houston Cougars athletic director Chris Pezman is expected to be hired for the vacant AD position at Arkansas State University.

A State announced that their search for a new AD had begun in April following the resignation of former Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Jeff Purinton.

Pezman took over as AD for the Houston Cougars in 2017 following the departure of Hunter Yuracheck to the University of Arkansas. He led the school until his firing in 2024, one year after it transitioned from the American Athletic Conference to the Big 12 Conference.

Between 2017 and 2024, the Cougars basketball team played in a National Championship, two Final Fours, three Elite Eight appearances and made the Sweet Sixteen five years in a row. The Cougars football team appeared in five bowl games during that span and their baseball team made the NCAA Tournament twice.

In 2024 the Arkansas State Red Wolves football team won the 68 Ventures Bowl against Bowling Green. In 2025, the school’s men’s basketball team won the Sun Belt Conference regular season crown and the school’s women’s basketball team won the Sun Belt Tournament and appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the first time.

The Red Wolves football team will take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in a first-ever meeting between the programs in September at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.
