Arkansas Tech University receives $6.1 million grant to get local K-12 students ready for college

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – A $6.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to Arkansas Tech University will help Russellville and Clarksville-area K-12 students prepare for extended education goals.

ATU said in a Tuesday release that it is one of 26 education entities in the United States chosen for the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Education (GEAR UP) grant for the 2024-2025 academic year. University officials said the grant is expected to run for seven years and will serve 1,157 students from the area school districts.

The release continued that the GEAR UP program's goals are to boost academic performance, increase high school graduation rates and prepare students for post-secondary education. The program will also help students and families choose and prepare for post-secondary education options.

“The program works with a cohort of students beginning at the upper elementary and middle grades levels to prepare them for college,” Dean of the ATU College of Education and Health Tim Carter said. “This grand-funded effort will involve mentoring, tutoring, family events, parental education and test preparation.”

Carter said the seven-year time frame would allow the university to begin working with students in the middle grades through their senior year of high school up to college enrollment.

The ATU GEAR UP office will be on the university’s Russellville campus. Staff will consist of a project director, advisors, office support, professional development coordinators, and student success coaches.

Officials said ATU is the only institution in Arkansas that has received a GEAR UP grant for the current school year.
