Maryland DB Tarheeb Still picked in fifth round of NFL draft by Los Angeles Chargers
Still was the first Maryland defensive back selected in this year’s draft.
Maryland defensive back Tarheeb Still became the second Terp selected in this year’s NFL draft when he was taken in the fifth round by the Las Angeles Chargers on Saturday. Still was selected with the second pick of the fifth round — No. 137 overall.
Offensive lineman Delmar Glaze was Maryland’s first draftee this year, taken by the Las Vegas Raiders in the third round on Friday. With Still’s selection, Maryland has now had multiple players drafted in three straight drafts and at least one defensive back in five of the last six drafts.
This past season was arguably Still’s most complete of his four-year college career. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after bringing in five interceptions, tied for sixth nationally, despite missing two games due to injury. Still had two multi-interception games last fall, one of which came in the Terps’ win at Nebraska. After that game, he was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week.
He also accumulated 45 tackles in 2023 — four for losses — and had four pass breakups.
Still forewent Maryland’s bowl game to prepare for the NFL draft and earned invites to both the East-West Shrine Bowl and the NFL scouting combine. At the combine, he ran a 4.52-second 40-yard dash and measured at 6-foot, 189 pounds.
Still also showed his ability to contribute on special teams during his time with the Terps. He spent some time as Maryland’s primary punt returner, breaking the program record for longest punt return in the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl when he took a punt back 92 yards for touchdown.
His positional versatility is a valuable asset as well, able to cover on both the inside and outside. Still was primarily used as a nickel corner for much of his career, but transitioned to more frequent use on the outside after Deonte Banks and Jakorian Bennett were drafted in 2023.
The Chargers will have a new look this coming fall under head coach Jim Harbaugh, who left for Los Angeles after winning a national championship with Michigan. Still played three games against Harbaugh’s Wolverines, accounting for 10 tackles.
