AST Weather Blog: Best viewing conditions of the Perseids Meteor Shower this weekend

The Perseids Meteor Shower is one of the most anticipated celestial events of the year, and this weekend marks its peak. Known for its bright, fast meteors, the Perseids typically put on a spectacular show, with rates of up to 100 meteors per hour during peak viewing. This year, the peak occurs Sunday night, but the meteors can still be seen in the nights before and after. To catch the best view, look to the northeast after midnight, when the shower will be at its most active.

For those planning to watch, Saturday night might offer slightly better viewing conditions, with clearer skies expected than on Sunday. Temperatures will be similar, ranging from the upper 60s to perhaps lower 70s, making for a comfortable evening under the stars. Sunday night, while being the peak, is forecasted to be partly cloudy. However, there should be enough breaks in the clouds to still enjoy a good show. Patience will be key, as the meteors will be most visible during these clearer moments.

Interestingly, the sun is currently in an active phase, with an increased possibility of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These CMEs could lead to displays of the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, but it’s unlikely they’ll be visible this far south in Arkansas. However, for those fortunate enough to experience both the Perseids and the aurora, it would make for an unforgettable night of skywatching.

So grab some bug spray, find a dark spot away from city lights, and enjoy the show. Whether you catch a full hour or just a few minutes of clear sky, the Perseids Meteor Shower is sure to dazzle.
