Jefferson County jailer arrested Saturday for smuggling contraband

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. – A Jefferson County jailer was arrested after investigators say she smuggled contraband into a detention center.

According to investigators, Miakia Ellis was arrested early Saturday morning at the Dub Brassell Adult Detention Center shortly after she arrived for her shift.

Investigators say Ellis was the subject of a three-week investigation by the Tri-County Drug Task Force and the Criminal Investigation Division.

When Ellis was searched Saturday morning, investigators said they found 115 grams of suspected marijuana, smoking papers, lighters, a phone charger and cell phones.

Investigators say Ellis is facing charges of criminal conspiracy, furnishing prohibited articles, possession of a controlled substance with purpose to deliver and criminal use of a communication device.

Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods said he is proud of the actions of his investigators leading to the arrest.

"This arrest, like others in the past, speaks to our commitment to the public in pursuing charges against those who threaten the security of our detention facilities,” Woods said. “We have a zero-tolerance policy against contraband, and we will seek the maximum penalty possible for those who choose to ignore it and violate the law.”

Ellis is expected to appear in court on Monday morning.
