Arkansas moves to ‘Very High’ flu activity in latest report

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas has returned to a “Very High” flu activity level in the Arkansas Department of Health report for the first week of February.

The report for the Feb. 3 week places Arkansas at a ranking of 11 on the 13-point scale. The state has been consistently at a “High” rank through January, otherwise having a single Very High score for the last week of December.

According to ADH, 11 Arkansans reportedly died due to flu for the week. Throughout the 2023-2024 flu season that began Oct. 1, the state has recorded 40 patient deaths due to flu, with 25 of those deaths to people above 65 years of age.

The state also reported 14 flu outbreaks from nursing homes of other congregate settings in the current season, adding two to last week’s 12 reported outbreaks. The state began the new year with five recorded outbreaks.

ADH recorded 83 patient deaths due to pneumonia for the week of Feb. 2, while no COVID-19 deaths were recorded. RSV activity is not tracked in the weekly report.

For the week, 71 people were admitted to the hospital for flu and 85 patients for COVID-19.

The agency points out in the report that numbers reflect when a death was reported, not when a death took place. Another limitation of the report is it only tracks hospitalizations, deaths and outbreaks of the flu or COVID-19. The report’s number reflects the timing and location of disease activity, but not the actual impact, the authors state.
