North Little Rock Board of Education approves to rename Seventh Street Elementary School

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A North Little Rock elementary school will soon receive a new name after the decision was approved at a recent board meeting.

The North Little Rock Board of Education approved the North Little Rock School District superintendent's recommendation to rename Seventh Street Elementary School to North Little Rock 6 Academy of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences.

School district officials said the veterinary & agricultural science-themed school will aim to engage students in project-based learning and problem-solving strategies in all subject areas.

“A veterinary and agricultural-themed elementary school is a great idea to add real-world relevance to learning any subject matter. I am excited to learn more about this new, innovative learning opportunity for the students who attend this unique school and how we can partner with them,” Dr. Laura Rothfeldt, State Public Health Veterinarian at the Arkansas Department of Health, said.

Officials with the North Little Rock School District said the proposed name honors six Black teenagers who attempted to integrate North Little Rock High School in 1957.

The school will house Pre-K through eighth-grade students over the next several years, NLRSD officials said.

The name change will go into effect in the 2025-2026 school year. The NLRSD will celebrate with an event in September, marking the anniversary of the North Little Rock Six.
