Sherwood woman celebrates 100th birthday with family, friends

SHERWOOD, Ark. – It was a big day in Sherwood as a woman credited with dedicating her life to her family, community, and country is turning 100.

Amy Barnes Sanders' 100th birthday party was held a day in advance Saturday afternoon in the library named in her honor.

Mrs. Sanders graduated high school in 1941. Among many accomplishments, she was the original operator of the city of Sherwood’s first computer while serving as city clerk beginning in 1972.

“It’s not been one of my ambitions to live this long, but here I am, so I feel like I should do as much as I can for as many as I can for as long as I can,” Sanders said with a laugh.

Sanders’ great grand daughter Amy Barnes Sanders said it’s nice learning about her impact on the community.

“It's just awesome getting to know someone that impacted such a large community and just what she’s done for her community of Sherwood and her family,” Sanders said.

Amy Barnes Sanders married her husband Rex in 1944. She retired in 1989 but remains active in the Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church and several other organizations.
