Red Cross reminds Arkansans to fall back into checking smoke alarms this weekend

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The American Red Cross reminds Arkansans to check their smoke alarms this weekend.

Officials said that homeowners will set clocks back one hour on Sunday, Nov. 3, and the twice-a-year change is also an excellent time to check smoke alarms.

Interim Executive Director of the Red Cross Greater Arkansas Chapter Stephanie Vardaman said smoke alarms are critical to household safety.

“Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half as you only have about two minutes to safely get out,” Vardaman said. “Every second counts when there’s a home fire and the sooner an alarm alerts you to a fire, the sooner you can get to a safer place.”

Officials said a smoke alarm should be on every home floor, inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. They said alarms should be replaced every 10 years.

Red Cross officials also reminded homeowners that testing the smoke alarm is a great time to review and practice the household escape plan with the family. They added that the escape plan should have two ways to get out of every room and get a person outside in under 2 minutes.

Officials said if a homeowner needs help and cannot afford to purchase smoke alarms, or are physically unable to install one, the Red Cross may be able to help. Visit RedCross.org/SmokeAlarmAR or call 1-800-RED-CROSS to register for free smoke alarm installation and fire safety instruction.
