Jefferson County defamation suit filed by county judge, others against Justice of the Peace

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. – A lawsuit filed by the Jefferson County judge and others against a justice of the peace claims defamation.

The suit claims that Justice Lloyd Franklin Jr. defamed five people in a July 8 letter to the Arkansas Legislative Joint Auditing Committee. Plaintiffs in the suit are county Judge Gerald Robinson, Joni Alexander Robinson, president of the Pine Bluff Black Chamber of Commerce and wife of Judge Robinson, Ricky Bullard, Jefferson County Road superintendent, Robert Daniels of Jefferson County and Dee Brown of Crittenden County.

The lawsuit claims Franklin accused Judge Robinson of corruption, extortion and fraud in appropriating or selling property and equipment using county funds. The suit also claims the judge violated campaign laws.

The suit asserts that Franklin knew the charges were false and were made with malicious intent.

The plaintiffs are asking for a jury trial and claim they are entitled to punitive damages above $75,000 for the harm caused by the alleged false charges. They also request court costs “and for all other just and proper relief to which they are entitled.”

KARK News reached out to Franklin for a comment but has not received a response. If a response is received, this story will be updated.
