Metroplan receives more than $900,000 to improve road safety in central Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Metroplan was awarded a grant of more than $900,000 to help improve road safety in central Arkansas.

Officials said a $913,690 grant will go towards the Streets and Roads for All Program. The funds will be used to address safety concerns in the Safety Action plan, including enhancements at high-speed signalized intersections, technology for EMS vehicles and high visibility crossing for the regional trail system.

"MEMS is committed to providing high-quality emergency medical services to our community," MEMS executive director Greg Thompson said. "These funds secured by Metroplan will improve safety for our crews and community while we are en route to or on the scene of emergencies by providing automated messages to nearby motorists alerting them to our presence."

Metroplan is an organization that works with local governments to determine transportation needs and funding for investments, according to its website.

Faulkner County Judge and Metroplan vice president Allen Dodson said data shows that rural high-speed signalized intersections are a challenge in the region and officials are looking to implement technology to address it.

Metroplan officials said the award was a collaboration with Metropolitan Emergency Medical Systems (MEMS), Arkansas Department of Transportation, Faulkner County Government and Pulaski County Government.
